Huge thanks to all of you who turned out to take part in our first 10K of 2014 in River Lee Country Park, Lee Valley. This glorious and scenic park played host to hundreds of women who turned up to run with us in the sun today. This fast, flat course took place on a straight path, with a Horsemill stream on the left and lots of wildlife on route. The WR pacers spotted ducks and many varieties of dogs! We had pacers for all abilities, ranging from 50 to 70 minutes and our course marshals never ran out of energy or enthusiasm when it came to cheering on the runners.
We kicked off with a pre-race warm-up courtesy of WR regular cover model and fitness coach Jacqueline Freeman, a busy mum who knows all about the demands of fitting in her training with running. Jacqui, who is hoping to secure a place in next year’s Virgin Money London Marathon, led an energetic and fun ten-minute warm up at 9.40am, before the runners made their way to the start line for the race to kick off at 10am. Jacqui also took part in the race and came in just under 60 minutes, admitting afterwards that the event has rekindled her passion for running.
This two-lap race flat course was perfect for both beginners and improvers seeking a fast time. Throughout the race, the temperatures were warm and the sunshine stayed out. WR Editor and 70-minute pacer, Chris Macdonald, who ran the Brighton Marathon three years ago in scorching summer temperatures, enjoyed the opportunity to run in the sun. ‘The surroundings and scenery were great, the atmosphere was incredible and the sun just added that extra bit of magic on the day,’ she says. ‘What a difference the sun can make to the running experience. If all days could be this good, I’d never get back on the treadmill!’
All runners collected a finisher’s medal at the end, as well as a free drawstring goody bag containing shampoo, nutrition from 9bar and a fantastic technical T-shirt. Once they’d collected their goodies, all runners were treated to free tea and pastries courtesy of the local scouts. The race-day atmosphere was fantastic – friendly and supportive. Race times were sent by text to each runner only minutes after they crossed the finish line. What more could you ask for?
‘Thank you for an amazing experience I had today running my first 10k. Everybody was so nice and the atmosphere was great. I’m so proud of myself for being able to run all the way through after just nine weeks of running. I couldn’t pick a better race to run than yours!’ – Renata Chiatoh
