The sun always seems to shine for us in Southampton and this year was no different! Around 8.30am women began to gather on the Common under glorious sunshine, swiftly peeling off their pre-race layers in preparation for what looked to be a hot and muggy race.
Between picking up race numbers and dropping off bags, runners enjoyed a series of pre-race interviews, kicking off with a Q&A with contributing editor, blogger and 50-minute pacer Tina Chantrey. Tina shared a little bit about her running background, before giving the runners some excellent pacing advice and race-day tips for bagging a PB. Next up on the stage was David Parson from Good Full Stop, our Official Healthy Snack Partner, who talked the ladies through the bars, their health benefits and the delicious flavours on offer. Two ladies were then invited up onto the stage to memorize all of the flavours, and both were thrilled to have passed the memory test and walk away with a whole month’s supply of the bars! We then heard from Charly Wright, brand manager at boobydoo, our Specialist Apparel Partner, who spoke to the women about out the importance of getting a quality and well-fitting sports bra for running.
It was then time for the warm-up, led by Sarah Kay and Sophie Exton-Woodford from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Services, who spoke to the runners about their challenging but exciting job roles and the work they do to get more women involved in the fire and rescue services. They soon geed the ladies up for the race start with an exciting warm-up and it wasn’t long before the 5K runners made their way to the start line, ready to take on the flat and scenic one-lap route around the Common. Five minutes later, the 10K runners were off, running two laps of the Common, on what proved to be a course full of PB potential. Kirsten Thatcher was just one of the runners who took home a PB. “Fantastic event, loved it, great course and I got a PB,” she said.
First-time 10K race participant Helen Doyle also took home a PB and, along with lots of other runners, was grateful to the supportive marshals, who worked hard to keep runners motivated – and hydrated – on the hot and humid course. She said: “My first event ever! 10K with the last week of training in bed with a horrible cold/flu virus. Got to the start line and I finished with a PB. No idea how I managed it but am chuffed to bits! Thank you to all those marshals dotted around, handing out water and finish-line goodies!”
Once all the 5K and 10K runners were home, the one-mile fun run then took place, a new event within our 2017 series. Mums, dads and children of all ages took part and some very weary little ones were delighted to receive a sparkling race medal for their achievements.
We’d like to thank all of our sponsors for making the day possible and our Southampton event the best yet: NSPCC, our Official Charity Partner; Good Full Stop, our Healthy Snack Partner; Boobydoo, our Specialist Apparel Partner; Roots Collective, our Healthy Blend Partner; and Saka, our Official Water Partner.
